On April 24th, 2026, Martin Van Buren High School students attended the Youth Empowerment Conference at Queens College, an event focused on leadership, motivation, student voice, and future opportunities. MVB Media students and Student Government members participated in the trip, joining students from schools across Queens for a day of workshops, performances, and career-focused learning experiences.

The conference opened with musical and dance performances from several Queens North high schools, setting an energetic and inspiring tone for the event. Following the performances, students participated in presentations and workshops centered on personal growth, education, career exploration, and community involvement. Speakers encouraged students to develop confidence, take responsibility for their futures, and remain active in their schools and communities.

As part of the experience, selected MVB media students participated on the official media team for the conference after applying for a Queens North media internship opportunity. These students documented the event by taking photos and videos and conducting interviews with participants and organizers. This hands-on role allowed students to apply classroom skills in a real-world setting while gaining experience in professional media production.

Throughout the day, students also had the opportunity to explore the Queens College campus and become familiar with its academic buildings, facilities, and student spaces. The visit gave many students a first-hand look at college life and helped them better understand potential future pathways in higher education.

In addition, students connected with Queen North, which supports media-related learning experiences and internship opportunities for high school students. Through this program, students were introduced to real-world media skills such as storytelling, content creation, and communication. Many students asked questions about internships and learned more about how to pursue careers in creative and media industries.

Overall, the Youth Empowerment Conference provided MVB students with an inspiring and educational experience that combined leadership development with real-world exposure to media and college environments. The event encouraged students to reflect on their goals, strengthen their leadership skills, and take advantage of future opportunities such as internships and enrichment programs. Many students left feeling motivated to stay involved, build their skills, and continue working toward their futures.
