On May 18th, 2026, Martin Van Buren High School media students visited St. John’s University for an educational experience focused on media, communication, and creative production. The trip provided students with the opportunity to explore a college campus, learn about higher education opportunities, and gain firsthand experience with professional media equipment and facilities.

During the visit, students toured the St. John’s campus and walked through several academic buildings, learning more about what it is like to attend the university. The tour gave students insight into campus life, college resources, and the overall student experience. For many students, the visit helped them begin to envision their future educational goals after high school.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the university’s video production facilities, where St. John’s students hosted a hands-on demonstration for the MVB media students. Participants had the opportunity to practice using professional media equipment, including teleprompters, green screens, switch boards, and cameras. The interactive experience allowed students to apply skills they have been developing in their media classes while gaining exposure to college-level production technology.

Students also attended a presentation by Professor Michael Rizzo, Director of the Journalism Program at St. John’s University. Drawing from his decades of experience in media and journalism, Professor Rizzo discussed the importance of communication, storytelling, and adaptability in today's media landscape. He shared insights into journalism careers, industry trends, and the skills students should continue developing if they are interested in pursuing media-related professions.

Throughout the day, students learned about different aspects of media studies, including broadcasting, journalism, digital production, and content creation. Presenters explained how media projects are developed and produced in professional environments, helping students connect classroom lessons to real-world applications. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about college admissions, academic programs, and potential career pathways in media and communications.
