Starting on January 27th, in celebration of New York City’s Respect for All Week, Ms. Choriatis’s Multimedia Journalism classes started on the creation of Public Service Announcements. For the PSAs, students created films focused on the themes of Respect for All week. These project topics included Celebrating Kindness/Be an Ally, Anti-Bullying/Cyberbullying, Respect for Diversity, Disability, Religious Acceptance, Racial Diversity, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation, LGBTQ Pride and Acceptance.

While the primary theme was Respect for All, students were also creating the PSA films to submit to the New York City Public School Film Festival. The deadline was February 13th, so the Media students had plenty of work ahead of them to make this critical deadline!

When first started, these students had a short amount of time to brainstorm, film, and edit. Many dedicated students used their lunch periods and afterschool to work extra on their PSA to complete it to perfection. With enough patience, determination, and excitement, all students were able to finish their PSA films on time and successfully submit their films into the NYC Public School Film Festival.

While this was a fun and exciting experience for all students involved, the PSAs made were impactful and encouraged students to respect others despite their differences. This activity is so important to help others understand the importance of respect, how it can impact others positively, and help in so many ways.
