On March 9th, 2026, Martin Van Buren High School welcomed guest speaker Tom Suozzi, who visited the school to speak with students about leadership, public service, and civic engagement. The event, held during the school day, brought together students from multiple grade levels for an opportunity to hear directly from a member of Congress.

During his visit, Suozzi shared insights about his role in government and explained how decisions made at the federal level can directly impact local communities such as Queens and surrounding areas. He discussed his personal career path and emphasized the importance of staying informed and involved in community issues.

Suozzi encouraged students to pay attention to current events, participate in discussions, and consider future careers in public service. He also spoke about the responsibilities that come with leadership and the value of civic participation in a democratic society.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions about government, voting, and what it is like to work in politics. His responses helped students gain a clearer understanding of how political systems operate and how elected officials serve their communities.

Overall, the guest speaker event provided an engaging and educational experience for the Martin Van Buren community. It helped students connect their classroom learning in government and social studies to real-world political processes. Many students left with a stronger understanding of civic responsibility and the importance of being informed and active members of society.
